The new LithoTack II

The new LithoTack II is two laboratory instruments in one. On the one hand the LithoTack is a simply to use precision tack measuring instrument on the other the LithoTack II determines water balance behavior of thin ink film under practice relevant conditions.   These and more water balance parameters can be measured quickly and accurately under press conform conditions

  • minimal water content for plate cleaning and maximal water content for correct tack (water tolerance range)
  • Interaction with hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces (for example, plate cleaning up)
  • Dynamics of water pickup and water release
  • Linetack as function of water content (includes a tack measurement of a dry ink)
  • Amount of free surface water

    Most importantly, the LithoTack operating conditions such as speed, film thickness and temperature are similar to those found on a printing press. A test takes a few minutes – so you can characterize and optimize your products quickly, ideally for R&D and QC.   Important questions  
  • Is there a good interaction between fount and ink?
  • How large is the water tolerance range for good print result?
  • Will the change to ink B instead ink A or the change to fount Y instead fount X have an essential effect to the print quality?
  • Is a bad cleaning up of the plate more caused by the fount or more caused by the ink or more caused by the plate?
  • What would be the better ink or the better fount for printing with less water?
  • Can I print with less alcohol?
  • Is there a higher tendency for free surface water?
  • Is there a higher risk for scumming?
    More can be answered with the LithoTack II on an early laboratory scale. Modern sensing devices like micro wave water content sensor or high speed tack sensor are scanning the emulsion properties in roller nip – the exact position where an emulsion is created.   The instrument is addressed to R&D, QC and applications engineering. For example, customer’s ink and fount solution may be in same test – you may provide exact information regarding their combined water emulsification performance and so their printability. This qualifies the new LithoTack II to a high beneficial laboratory instrument regarding early cost savings and advanced customer loyalty.

Thermotronic III/200

The Thermotronic 200 is an automatic varnish cooker to prepare varnish samples independent of individual operator skills.Even high resin contents do not effect the quality of the varnish due to the powerful stirring motor and the use of a magnetic stirring bar of high volume and weight. A special test tube with a round bottom is used in order to avoid residual material in the test tube. The filling weight of the test tube is 200 grams. In order to characterize the quality of resins, a solution of the resin must be prepared. The quality of the solution mainly depends on the parameters:
  • the quality of the solvent
  • the consistency of the preparation
For printing ink applications special brands of paraffinic or naphthenic oils are showing good performance. Naphthenic oils exhibit better solubility properties than the paraffinic ones. As in view of the VOC legislation aromatic compounds must be reduced or even eliminated, low-aromatic naphthenic oils have a growing market share in the production of printing inks. In most cases, these oils have shown to be usable, provides the resin is sufficiently easily soluble. Good varnishes can be prepared from resins and oils if the preparation method will be consistent and the number of variables will be reduced. This means that the resin must completely be dissolved in a controlled and reproducible way.   The EUROCOMMIT group recommends to use the Thermotronic-system for this purpose. The new Thermotronic 200has the same features as the standard Thermotronic III, but is capable to prepare much more varnish in the same time.   With the Thermotronic 200 one can cook 200 grams of varnish under automatic controlled conditions. All important functions like heating rate, dwell time cooling rate and stirring rate are controlled by the internal microprocessor unit. At the end of the temperature cycle a fixed end temperature can be defined by the user and an audible alarm sounds to indicate the end of the test.   In practise it may be necessary to alter the resin concentration in order to adjust the viscosity of the sample in the right range. The Thermotronic 200 has a special oil inlet in the top test head for extra oil dispension during the test.   In order to measure the rheological properties of complex systems like resin solutions, it is indispensable to use a Thermotronic system.   The new Thermotronic 200 is the ultimate system for quality control and laboratory applications in the printing ink industry.

Lithotronic IV

A good ink-water balance is important for high quality printing on lithographic offset printing presses. In order to be able to predict the performance on the press, the water absorbency of lithographic inks must be tested.

The Lithotronic IV is the first device to determine the water balance performance of offset inks and fount solutionswith 1% accuracy. The instrument is equipped with automatic gap adjustment (known from upper class rheometers) and a ceramic dosing system. Temperature, shear-rate and fountain solution content are exactly regulated and are corresponding to the conditions on fast running printing presses. The modern software allows you a quick and safe data evaluation. Thus is testing and optimizing of your products already possible before the operation on the printing press.   International manufacturers of fountain solutions, printing inks, binders and special additives use the instrument. TheLithotronic test method has become a semi-standard test for R&D and QC in ink and fount solution formulation; it is successfully approved by the EUROCOMMIT group.   The Lithotronic IV is a state-of-the-art measuring device for accurate and reproducible determination of the amount and rate of water absorption of a lithographic ink.

A typical and characteristic test pattern is showing three parameters:
  • quick changes in torque reflecting to the hydrophobic (= water repellent) nature of an ink
  • the torque profile reflecting to the rheological changes during the emulsification process and
  • the sudden drop in torque at the point where the emulsion is saturated with water.
The emulsification capacity is the weight ratio of the ink or varnish to the total water titration. The rheological behavior of emulsions is depending on the theology of all ingredients. In order to optimize the performance of lithographic offset inks, the effect of:
  • resins, varnishes or other binders,
  • pigments or carbon black,
  • additives,
  • fountain solutions
on the emulsification properties must be investigated. Additional tests with various standard emulsions at increasing or decreasing rotation speeds can be performed.

Rheology and flow properties are important to any kind of liquid and these properties are not easy to test as the viscosity of liquids depends on many parameters and conditions. To test these properties of a mixture of two non-compatible liquids is even more complicated. The Lithotronic IV instrument has been developed for these tests and offers a lot of important features, such as automatics temperature control, shear rate control and dispension rate control. The automatic dispension is a special feature which enables the user continues titration of a liquid into the sample during operation. The liquid that is added can be water, solvent, oil or anything else. By mixing these two liquids under controlled conditions, emulsification can be tested in a reproducible and standardized way.
