Colour matching with standardised light D50

Colour matching with standardised light D50
The CIE Standard Illuminant D50, with a correlated colour temperature (CCT) of 5000 Kelvin, is the predominant reference illuminant used in the graphic arts industry. This encompasses organizations involved in the creation and production workflow for graphic materials, from photographers and advertising agencies to prepress and reprographic businesses. The consistent use of standardised lighting throughout this value chain is indispensable in supporting accurate and consistent critical colour assessments of monitor soft proofs, hard copy proofs and prints of all types.

Colour matching with standardised light D65

Colour matching with standardised light D65
With a correlated colour temperature (CCT) of 6500 K, D65 corresponds to "average daylight from the northern sky" and is the reference illuminant in DIN 6173-2 "Colour matching" and a referenced illuminant in ASTM D1729. Its spectral energy distribution between 300 and 780 nm is described in DIN 5033 at increments of 5 nm.

Any lamp designed to simulate D65 must comply with standard ISO 3668 "Visual comparison of the colour of paints". The standard describes all the parameters required to ensure standard-compliant colour comparisons, such as standards presentation, viewing and ambient conditions. The illuminance level defined in this standard is between 1000 and 4000 lux, this wide range being due to the diversity of different applications. JUST viewing booths and luminaires achieve an illuminance of 2000 lux as standard, with optional brightness controls on soft proofing models.

Colour assessment of different materials and substrates

Colour assessment of different materials and substrates
To predict and avoid potential colour matching issues in visual assessment of coloured surfaces and materials, including paints, fabrics, ceramics, metals, plastics and paper, the use of colour matching devices equipped with multiple illuminants is indispensable. Such devices are often employed in application areas such as:

  • Research and development
  • Product management
  • Procurement & Supplier specifications
  • Incoming goods inspection
  • Manufacturing process control
  • Quality assurance
  • Technical, Sales and Customer support
The range of industries requiring precise colour assessments for such applications is quite broad and often subject to international standards. Exemplary industries include:
  • Automotive & Aerospace
  • Biological & Pharmaceuticals
  • Ceramics
  • Chemicals
  • Food and Agriculture
  • Furniture
  • Paints, coatings, finishes
  • Paper and packaging
  • Plastics
  • Textiles & Fabrics
Multiple illuminants for metamerism assessment

To visualise the effects of metamerism, two products or colour samples should be viewed and matched under different illuminants (at least three), ideally with identical viewing geometries and variables. The CIE illuminants D65 (average daylight from the northern sky), A (incandescent lamp), TL84/F11 (store lighting) and D50 (noon daylight) are very often used for this purpose.

Metamerism is efficiently simulated with a viewing booth or luminaire equipped with multiple, switchable light sources. Within a standardised viewing area, samples should be positioned closely alongside each other to support detection of slight colour differences. Colour changes due to optical brightening agents, security films and fluorescent products are more readily detected when the light source incorporates a switchable, additional UV-A source with a 365 nm peak wavelength.

About us

Company details

Just Normlicht – manufacturer of standardised colour viewing solutions

ORIGINS.
It all began with the production of neon signs and light boxes in the early 1970s, rapidly progressing to colour transparency viewers. By 1979, Horst Just, founder and namesake of JUST Normlicht GmbH, had built the foundation for our core business. We continue his legacy today, evolving our business in mutual partnerships with our customers.

Michael Gall, CEO, joined our company in 1988, initially assuming the position of joint manager along with Christa Just in 2002, and later assuming his role as sole shareholder and CEO of JUST Normlicht GmbH, Vertrieb + Produktion

MILESTONES.
Initially, our standardised light systems were adopted by printers and photo studios where colour-accurate visual comparisons to an original were essential to achieving quality reproductions. Customer confidence over the decades and our continuing investments in technology lead to JUST becoming synonymous with standardised light in the graphic arts industry.

Soon, demand for standardised light systems grew in other industries such as automotive, furniture and textiles. These customers prompted development of quality assurance solutions for such ‘manufacturing industries‘ as we continued expansion of our core graphic arts markets. Our business evolved to service a wide variety of industries and applications centered around light, lighting and visual asssement.

TODAY.
Today, JUST Normlicht‘s international headquarters in Germany (Weilheim, near Stuttgart), branches in France and the USA, and subsidary GL Optic in Poland, collectively delivery high quality lighting and light measure solutions globally. We are proud partners to companies ranging from start-ups to multi-billion conglomerants across a wide range of industries and applications.

Our JUST product lines are available in a range of standard sizes, configurations, light sources and viewing geometries for both 2- and 3-D objects. From portable viewing tables, to booths, stations, overhead fixtures, monitor-to-object proofing, and multi-spectral programmable LED lighting, we address a diverse range of needs. Custom products for specialized requirements are frequently developed and our Contract Metal Fabrication division provides the ability to deliver such unique solutions.
