iPlasma

Is iPLASMA a replacement for Corona – No!

This is a question we are often asked, so let us explain what it is, and how it differs.

In 95% of cases, Corona treatment of a substrate is still the perfect way to improve surface adhesion and deliver a first-class product. By modifying the surface energy of a non-absorbent material, like film or foil, Corona treatment will allow inks, lacquers and laminate film to adhere correctly and uniformly, and produce a quality result.

But, in the remaining 5% of cases, Corona treatment will not work because of the complexity of the chemical make-up of the substrate. And in these situations, Plasma treatment, or as we brand it ‘iPlasma®’, is needed to allow a secure bond. The simple difference is that where the Corona process is carried out in ambient air, iPlasma treatment requires a controlled environment and the use of a dopant gas.

Generally seen as a ‘softer’ process than Corona, iPlasma treatment offers different functionality and a new range of surface abilities. This is because the lower heat level has less impact on the surface, and the controlled environment allows the surface tension to be tuned to meet specific requirements. As a result, iPlasma is often seen as a combination of Corona and liquid primer but is in fact far more sophisticated and flexible in its capability.

Since introducing Plasma in 2010, Vetaphone has continued to develop the technology and the latest version of ‘iPlasma®’ is the most eco-friendly process available on the market, offering low running costs and reduced energy consumption.

Narrow Web

If you are a label printer you will know how important a quality print job is to your customers.
But the problem is that some of the substrates you use are plastic or foil based, and both create problems with ink and lacquer adhesion. This is because the surface energy of the material prevents the creation of a proper bond – in simple terms, it doesn’t stick well.

To create the quality of label that you want to sell to your customers requires good preparation, and an essential part of that is Corona treatment of the surface of the substrate you are using. Vetaphone high-quality Corona systems are accurate and controllable to ensure you are always applying exactly the right level of treatment in a situation where too much is as bad as too little.

Even substrates that have been treated prior to delivery can cause problems if the dyne level (surface adhesion) has decreased because of heat or humidity during transit or storage. This will prevent you from running your narrow web press at full speed and as a result cost money. By Corona treating all stock on-press prior to printing you can be confident of a perfect result every time. The same applies to top-coated stocks, which, because they use expensive chemicals, are costly to buy. Corona treating on-press often removes the need to buy these expensive materials.

Generators

The iCorona generator is at the heart of all our surface treatment technology.

This extensive range of fully computerised power sources offers a wide regulation band that combines high efficiency with minimal energy loss.

Controlled power is essential in surface treatment, so our generators’ ability to proportion the output power from 1 – 200kW related to line speed in a smooth and uniform manner removes the risk of pinholes in the substrate. Power regulation uses the ultra-fast Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique

iCorona generators are designed and manufactured to cope with the hardest of working conditions under 24/7 operation. They are self-diagnosing with both internal and external functions being monitored continuously.

Easy to use via the iCC7 multi-lingual and removable operator panel that allows remote control from the central line console, and easy to maintain from the front of the unit, all the electronics in an iCorona generator are modular for fast exchange and reduced downtime.

Unique to Vetaphone iCorona is the ability of the generator to switch between read-out modes that display either power output in kW, or energy delivered in Watt x min/ft². It is all part of our precision engineering.

Features:
Touch Control Panel
The user-friendly iCC7 touch control panel provides a graphic overview of the entire Corona system, and allows for control of two generators per panel.
Modular Build
Built with a unique resonant feedback system, iCorona generators automatically match the electrical power to the material, ensuring optimal surface treatment and efficiency.
Interface
Fieldbus communication interfaces ensure easy integration into the complete process control.
Guaranteed Support
Whenever the need for support arises our qualified and experienced technicians are never far away from you.
